The government is encouraging farmers to increase their production of pigeon peas (arhar). Pigeon pea is a significant kharif pulse crop.
Subsidy on Pigeon Pea Cultivation:
To promote pigeon pea cultivation, the government has launched an incentive scheme. Under this scheme, pigeon pea will be cultivated in 11 districts during the kharif season. Farmers will receive an 80% subsidy on seeds for pigeon pea cultivation. Each farmer can get a maximum of 16 kg of subsidized seeds for up to 2 acres of cultivation.
Certified Seeds for Farmers:
The incentive scheme includes the distribution of certified seeds for pigeon pea cultivation. The districts covered under this scheme are Aurangabad, Munger, Sheikhpura, Jehanabad, Arwal, Nawada, Lakhisarai, Banka, Jamui, and Nalanda. Farmers will be provided with certified seeds of pigeon pea varieties with a maturity period of less than 10 years.

Essential Steps for Pigeon Pea Cultivation: Pigeon pea cultivation requires adequate irrigation and sunlight. June and July are considered the best months for sowing pigeon peas. Loamy or sandy loam soil is ideal for good yields. Before sowing, mix compost manure into the soil. Prepare the field with 2-3 deep plowings and ensure proper drainage. Select high-yielding varieties of pigeon pea seeds for better quality production. Treat the seeds before sowing to prevent pest and disease infestation.
Apply Online: The target is to provide 10,000 quintals of pigeon pea seeds to farmers in the 11 districts. Farmers will receive seeds through licensed seed vendors in their respective blocks. To avail of this scheme, farmers must apply online on the agriculture department’s portal.
